Its name was picked arbitrarily by the Tualatin Development Company, Inc., which used a royalty theme in naming the city streets. The population was 1,949 at the 2000 census. Created as a planned adult community, King City was incorporated in March of 1966. The city's legal restrictions which forbid minors from living within its city limits for more than a short time have since been subjected to increasing criticism. Due to controversy in the annexation by the City of Tigard of the Bull Mountain area directly north of King City, a proposal for King City to annex the area instead was made. Since the population and size of Bull Mountain is significantly large (about 5,600 registered voters), compared with King City, this would be a noteworthy change in King City.
